Now for the why. On the Wednesday before check-in, I reached out in the app requesting to check-in an hour early since we were going to be able to arrive sooner than we thought. James said that was fine, but for quicker communication, contact him via his direct number that was listed on the app.
After sending an initial text, James told me that I hadn't paid for my stay. I had already received an invoice from VRBO and it had been taken out of my bank account. I forwarded a copy of the invoice, to which he replied, "well, I haven't seen any of that money." I informed him that usually VRBO doesn't release funds until at least a day after check-in just in case something happens and we aren't able to make it, etc. He proceeds to tell me he is having issues with VRBO and inputting a payment method and he hadn't received funds from multiple other stays. I told him that while I understood, I had paid and didn't know what else to tell him other than to contact VRBO about his payment. He then told me everything was fine and he just wanted to see if I would pay outside of VRBO for a discount but not to worry. Upon arrival, he refused entry and we had to scramble to find another place to stay on another app because a hotel for one night was too inconvenient via VRBO. All he had to do was correct his tax form, but instead, he almost ruined my trip. TERRIBLE!!!!
